Produced by Kenny Beats.
The dynamic Smino has risen to music’s upper echelon through an innovative flair; no one quite sounds like Smino, and conversely, Smino doesn’t really sound like anyone else. In an oversaturated marketplace, engorged with regurgitated formulas, Smino is refreshingly, thankfully, one-of-one. On his new record, “Trina,” the eclectic St. Louis native distills his ranging styles on wax.
Produced by Kenny Beats, who has a proclivity for camouflaging instrumentals with the focal artist, he enables Smino’s unique approach by lacing him with an apt soundscape. “Trina” is bubbly and fun, but retains sonic elements that could be precarious for the uninitiated rapper. For Smino, though, this challenging musical springboard fosters his varied vocal abilities — he sings as well as he raps, raps as well as he sings, and seamlessly blends the two together while embedding them organically in the Whoa Kenny production.
“Trina” is just further evidence of how Smino has been able to carve out a fruitful pocket in the music game.
