Producer To Watch: Mike Hector

If you’re not already familiar with Los Angeles-based producer, Mike Hector, it is time you get acquainted with him. He’s produced for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Denzel Curry, and most recently, he co-produced Lil Gotit and Nav’s song, “Burnt N Turnt,” with Based1. When you listen to records that Mike Hector has produced, you’ll notice impressive versatility and depth on every one of them: he uses a range of melodic elements, from atmospheric synths to dark, ominous pianos, all backed by hard-hitting drums.

On “Burnt N Turnt,” Mike Hector layers several sinister melodies on top of booming 808s. The track never feels too busy from a production standpoint, leaving plenty of room for Lil Gotit and Nav to create a trap anthem. This record shows Hector’s ability to make energetic trap music, but to get a full understanding of his creativity, you should check out “God” by Kendrick Lamar, “Hair Down” by SiR, and “Little Demon” by Frank Ocean.
