With so many rising rappers coming out on the daily, it can be easy for burgeoning acts to get lost in the shuffle. Not if you’re NLE Choppa, though. After shooting up the charts with his praised single, “Shotta Flow,” the Memphis artist has kept his foot on the gas — and competitors’ throats. Today, however, the teenage sensation returns with a softer offering, “Dekario.”
Standing in contrast with his host of heaters, “Dekario” is crooned behind an auto-tuned veil, exposing a different side to the explosive rapper. Not only is it a stylistic departure for Choppa, but a conceptual one, as well.
“Dekario” is a cathartic vehicle for Choppa, as he depressurizes his crowded thoughts by detailing the pain flooding his psyche. He begins the record by stating, “So much shit been on my mind that I don’t know where to start,” filling the song’s remaining three-minutes by speaking on death, exploitation, deceit, and more.
For an artist revered for his zealous antics, which has birthed a slew of viral singles, “Dekario” is a pleasing course-correction for the ascending talent, revealing Choppa’s emotional depth.
