While paying homage to the fallen Nipsey Hussle.

The West Coast’s impact on hip-hop is undeniable. From the stars they’ve minted — like Snoop to Dre, from Kendrick to Vince Staples — to the multi-faceted sounds that boom out of the lowriders that cruise its streets, California’s influence is as tangible as it is influential.

And while they’ve birthed some of the greatest rappers of all time, they are far from a nostalgic musical state — they consistently deliver great, challenging new artists.

Bridging California’s staple G-Funk sound with the new wave coursing throughout hip-hop is the Jheri Curl-wearing G Perico. Today, the 31-year-old rapper has come through with a loosie, the aptly titled “West Coast” — a remix to fellow Californian G-Eazy’s track.

A prime manifestation of combining his prototypical Cali roots with an updated flair, Perico’s freestyle shows that his lyricism stands toe-to-toe with anyone coming out today, and how he can apply that heightened conceptual knowledge to almost any production.
